What to Use After a Clay Mask (and Can You Use Vitamin C?)

After a clay mask, follow with a serum and a moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp. Vitamin C serum is fine for most people, and sunscreen comes next if it's daytime. Clay lifts away oil and buildup, so the next step is putting comfort and hydration back.

Here's exactly what to use after the Gleamin Vitamin C Clay Mask, what to leave for another night, and how the mask fits into a full routine.

Key takeaways

  • After a clay mask, apply a hydrating serum or your vitamin C serum, then moisturizer, while skin is still slightly damp.
  • Yes, you can use vitamin C after a clay mask; if your skin is sensitive, use it the next morning instead.
  • Skip scrubs, strong exfoliating acids and retinoids on mask nights so skin doesn't get over-worked.
  • The mask replaces a step, not the whole routine: cleanse, mask, serum, moisturize, and wear SPF every morning.

Where does a clay mask go in your routine?

A clay mask goes after cleansing and before everything else. Think of it as a deeper version of the cleanse step:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Clay mask (about 10 minutes), then rinse
  3. Toner or essence, if you use one
  4. Serum
  5. Moisturizer
  6. Sunscreen (mornings only)

Don't put a clay mask on over serum or moisturizer. The clay would just absorb them, and it can't reach your skin through the layer.

What should you put on right after rinsing?

Work quickly: within a minute or two of patting dry, while skin is still a little damp. Damp skin takes up hydration more readily, and it stops that tight, post-clay feeling from setting in.

  • A serum. Either a hydrating serum or your vitamin C serum (see below).
  • A moisturizer. This is the most important step after any clay mask. Our Advanced Brightening Moisturizer pairs vitamin C with ceramides and hyaluronic acid.
  • A facial oil, if your skin is dry. Press a few drops over moisturizer. Our Supernutrient Oil is made for this.
  • Sunscreen, if it's daytime. Broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher.

Can you use vitamin C serum after a clay mask?

Yes. For most skin, a vitamin C serum straight after a clay mask is a good pairing. The mask brings vitamin C-rich botanicals (Kakadu plum, desert lime and finger lime) for about 10 minutes. The serum then provides leave-on vitamin C that stays on your skin.

Two adjustments:

  • If your skin is sensitive, apply your vitamin C serum the next morning instead. Freshly masked skin can be a little more reactive.
  • If your serum uses low-pH L-ascorbic acid and tends to tingle, wait until the next day too.

Our Superactive Serum uses stable vitamin C forms such as 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbyl phosphate with niacinamide. Many people use it on the days between masks, or the morning after.

What should you avoid after a clay mask?

Keep mask nights simple. Leave these for another evening:

  • Scrubs and cleansing brushes. The clay has already lifted buildup. More friction just irritates.
  • Strong exfoliating acids, such as high-strength glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid toners and peels.
  • Retinoids, including retinol. They're great in a routine, but not on the same night as a mask if your skin is reactive.
  • Alcohol-heavy toners and astringents that dry skin further.
  • Hot showers or saunas straight after. Heat on freshly masked skin can leave it red and tight.

If you use prescription skincare, ask your dermatologist how to schedule a clay mask around it.

Can you exfoliate and use a clay mask in the same week?

Yes, just not on the same night. A clay mask lifts away surface buildup, and a chemical exfoliant loosens dead cells. Together on one evening, that's a lot for most skin. Spread them out: for example, mask on Tuesday and Friday and use your exfoliant on Wednesday. If your skin feels tight or stings when you apply moisturizer, you're doing too much. Drop the exfoliant first.

Should you use toner after a clay mask?

Only a gentle one. If you like toner, choose a hydrating, alcohol-free toner or essence and pat it in. You don't need one to "rebalance pH" after this mask. Rinsing with plain water and moving on to serum and moisturizer is enough.

Is it better to use a clay mask morning or night?

Either works. Most people prefer evenings, when there's time to relax for 10 minutes and nothing goes over it but moisturizer. Morning masking is great before an event. Just finish with moisturizer and sunscreen. Because vitamin C's antioxidant protection is most useful during the day, many people use their vitamin C serum in the morning and mask in the evening.

What does a weekly routine with the mask look like?

Here's a simple week built on the Gleamin range. It follows The Gleamin brightening routine:

  • Every morning: cleanser, Superactive Serum, moisturizer, sunscreen.
  • Most evenings: cleanser, serum, moisturizer.
  • Two evenings a week (for example, Tuesday and Friday): cleanser, Vitamin C Clay Mask for 10 minutes, moisturizer. Skip the serum those nights if your skin is sensitive.
  • Another evening, if you use one: your exfoliant or retinoid, on a non-mask night.

Oily skin can add a third mask night. Dry or sensitive skin should stay at one. For skin-type adjustments, see Is a Clay Mask Good for Oily, Breakout-Prone Skin? and Can You Use a Clay Mask on Dry Skin?

What's the one step you should never skip?

Sunscreen. UV is the biggest trigger for new pigment. Without daily SPF, no mask or serum can keep up. If you want a brighter, more even-looking tone, wear SPF 30 or higher every morning, and reapply when you're outdoors. Results from any routine build over 8 to 12 weeks and vary from person to person. Our sun protection FAQ has more.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use niacinamide after a clay mask?

Yes. Niacinamide is gentle and pairs well with vitamin C for a more even-looking tone. Apply it after rinsing, then moisturizer. Our Superactive Serum contains both.

Can I use retinol the same night as a clay mask?

If your skin is resilient and used to retinol, you may be fine. Most people, especially those with sensitive or dry skin, do better keeping retinoids for non-mask nights. If you use a prescription retinoid, ask your dermatologist.

Do I need to moisturize after a clay mask if my skin is oily?

Yes. Clay takes away oil and some water. A lightweight moisturizer keeps skin comfortable and helps it feel balanced. Skipping it can leave skin tight and irritated.

Can I use a sheet mask after a clay mask?

Yes, a simple hydrating sheet mask after a clay mask is a nice pairing. Keep it fragrance-free if your skin is sensitive, and follow with moisturizer.
